Whitney Gardens and Nursery
Much time and effort is spent in caring for and grooming the garden. Every leaf is raked and composted and recycled back into the soil. We take a great deal of pride in growing rhododendrons and azaleas, and in helping the public with as much helpful information as possible.
We show how to make cuttings, how to make new crosses, how the plant rhododendron and azalea seed, how to prune and how to pinch and most importantly, how to care for these plants.
We receive numerous inquiries from professional landscape architects to the private home-owners regarding large rhododendrons. We sell plants ranging in size from 4 feet to over 16 feet - some named varieties, others un-named Whitney hybrids.
For those who are looking for pollen, it is always available from any plant located at the garden. Many plants will not be listed in our catalog. However, if you will please write indicating your needs prior to the blooming season, we can certainly confirm availability.
The plant population at the garden exceeds 2,500 different varieties along with a very select grouping of choice species. Certain cuttings are available through prior arrangements only.
We continue to evaluate additional Whitney seedlings as well as other hybridizers' creations. The public is a good barometer and provides a tremendous amount of feedback regarding the plants located in the garden. Because a plant is new is not really the key element; it must also be distinctive from the others, a definite improvement upon existing hybrids and a consistent performer. With so many people hybridizing, no one has a corner on the market. The genus rhododendron has come a long way, as we all continue to search for the Holy Grail in rhododendron hybridizing.
Whitney worked diligently for forty years to create his masterpieces. The best of the Whitney hybrids include: Anna Rose Whitney, Anne's Delight, Creamy Chiffon, George's Delight, Sunny Day, Top Banana and Virginia Richards. Others include: Beautiful Day, Blue Frost, Blue Pacific, Blue Rhapsody, Cabaret, El Camino, Fabulous, Heavenly Scent (or Purfume), Honeymoon, Hurricane, Morning Sunshine, Ruby Hart, Whitney Orange or Late Orange and Whitney Purple.
A recent visitor to our gardens wrote, "Man is closer to God in a graden than any other place on Earth."
